Welcome to the Community Schools & Philly Reading Coaches Volunteer Hub!

Our mission is to advance educational equity, strengthen school-community partnerships, and empower residents to take an active role in student success.

The Mayor’s Office of Education (MOE) and the Office of Children and Families (OCF) work together to ensure that every child and family in Philadelphia has access to high-quality educational opportunities, supportive environments, and strong community connections.

Philadelphia's young people need YOU! Read on to learn how you can get involved as a Community Schools Volunteer and/or a Philly Reading Coaches Volunteer.

Philly Reading Coaches (PRC) Volunteers
What are Community Schools? Community Schools are a partnership among the City of Philadelphia, the School District of Philadelphia, and school communities. To support student success and wellbeing, we coordinate strategic partnerships and build relationships between students, families, school staff, and community organizations. There are 20 Community Schools located across the City, serving nearly 13,000 students!

Philadelphia's Community Schools rely on volunteers to support initiatives like food distribution, student and family engagement events, beautification projects, and more!

Volunteers are welcome to join us one-time or on an ongoing basis as dedicated contributors to one school or multiple schools.

What is Philly Reading Coaches? Philly Reading Coaches (PRC) is an afterschool early literacy program that combines early reading support, access to books, and civic engagement. PRC pairs volunteers to read one-on-one with K-3 students for at least 1 hour per week from October to May. Volunteers encourage a love of reading in our city's children's and strengthen literacy skills by making reading fun!

Volunteer opportunities are available at multiple schools throughout the City. See our site locations here.

Please note that these opportunities require a weekly commitment when school is in session.

Want to do both?

Volunteers are able to take part in both the weekly Philly Reading Coaches volunteer literacy sessions AND opportunities or projects hosted through Community Schools. In fact, many PRC locations are Community Schools!
